Homemade Easter Egg Dyes
Skip the egg dying kit and color your Easter eggs naturally with homemade dyes that use onions, cabbage, blueberries, and other kitchen tricks

  1. Start by washing your hard boiled eggs with soapy water and dry and setting aside.
  2. In a pot add 2 TBSP of vinegar to 1 quart of water, add your ingredients and bring to a boil.  Lower heat and allow the ingredients to simmer for 30 min.
  3. Strain the dye into a bowl and cool.
  4. Lower your egg into the dye and leave for as little as 2min and for as long as overnight until you reach your desired color.  This method of cold dipping will give you subtle, translucent color.
  5. If you desire a more saturated color you can boil the eggs (raw) with the strained dye.  The heat will allow the color to saturate the shells.
  • Red-cabbage dye: 4 cups chopped cabbage
  • Turmeric dye: 3 tablespoons turmeric
  • Onion-skin dye: 4 cups onion skins (skins of about 12 onions)
  • Beet dye: 4 cups chopped beets
  • Blueberries dye: 4 cups blueberries
  • Cranberries dye: package of fresh cranberries or juice
  • Spinach dye: 4 cups of spinach
